| Data Solutions recently completed the bespoke software
required to control automated screening of transfer baggage
at a well known International Airport Terminal.
To minimise development time, the software was written using
an object orientated approach. Each part of the system was
defined as a specific object, each of which has standard characteristics.
This approach meant that the software could be tested before
conveyor installation was completed and then configured to
include the final number of conveyors and equipment.
Pre-spaced baggage is now X-rayed and each item tracked to
prevent tampering as it moves along parallel lines of conveyors
to its destination.
During operation, if a bag size and position fails to match
that already learned by the software, it is identified as
a ‘mis-track’ (it could have been tampered with)
and labelled as reject.
Specifications allowed for a ‘mis-track’ rate
of 1 percent, but the system actually achieves a rate of less
than 0.2 percent.
This figure beats all other baggage handling systems operated
in the UK, minimises ‘lost luggage’ handling time
and enhances passenger safety and security.
Other airports are now implementing this type of screening
system.
Meanwhile, at another Large International Airport, Data Solutions
has provided the on-site management for electrical installation
and commissioning of its new transfer baggage facility -thought
to be the largest of its type in Europe. Completed this year,
the project involves screening for explosive substances for
enhanced passenger safety.
